Hallmarking

When you’re buying silver jewellery, you want to know that you’re getting the quality you expect. That’s where hallmarking comes in.

A hallmark is an official mark stamped onto precious-metal jewellery to confirm its purity. For silver, the most common hallmark is 925, which means the piece contains 92.5% pure silver.

I have my silver jewellery hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office, one of the UK’s historic assay offices. My registered maker’s mark is GKT, so when you see these initials alongside the hallmark, you’ll know the piece has been made by me.

Not all of my silver jewellery will carry a hallmark. Under UK hallmarking regulations, silver items weighing more than 7.78g are required to be hallmarked, while pieces below this weight can legally be sold without one.

For pieces that require hallmarking, I send them to the Birmingham Assay Office to be independently tested and hallmarked. This gives you confidence that your jewellery meets the required silver standard and is exactly what you expect it to be.
